In October of 1871, the devastating Great Chicago Fire blazed a trail almost four miles in length through the very core of the city. Despite the widespread destruction, it presented an opportunity to reconstruct Chicago as a forward-thinking metropolis. When The World's Columbian Exposition selected Chicago as its host city, a flurry of preparations took place to enhance and upgrade the city's appearance and infrastructure, in preparation for the arrival of global visitors.
