At just 27 years old, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a highly influential artist, known for combining historical commentary, images, and text in his works. His pieces were not only visually compelling, but also had a poetic quality. Basquiat emerged as a prominent figure in the neo-expressionist movement of the 1980s, and even now, decades later, his themes of inequality, racism, and injustice remain relevant and thought-provoking.
