The renowned 20th century artist, Alexander Calder (1898–1976), challenged artistic norms with his suspended abstract mobiles and monumental stabiles. By removing his sculptures from pedestals, he invited viewers to directly experience his work, a concept that also applies to his performative pieces, furniture design, jewelry, and paintings. The exquisite Calder Playing Cards are inspired by his vibrant Card Player series, with the striped back design taken directly from his paintings. Each card features Calder's own beautiful handwriting, and the court cards were specially created from another series of striking gouache paintings from the same era. This deck is a faithful reproduction, paying tribute to Calder's pioneering legacy as a master of artistic innovation.
