Mark Rothko, a towering figure in modern art, explored the profound depths of human emotion through his work. His remarkable legacy lies in expressing both sorrow and joy with striking simplicity—often through just two rectangles. Born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia), he immigrated to the United States at age 10. After evolving artistically, Rothko emerged as a key figure in New York's avant-garde scene during the late 1940s, a period when the aftermath of global conflict inspired bold creative shifts. He passed away in 1970 at 66. The National Gallery of Art holds the largest public collection of Rothko’s paintings and works on paper, boasting 1,100 pieces.
