Experience the magnificence of modern Black rodeo culture throughout America.

At the invitation of Charles Perry, director and producer of The Black Cowboy, photographer Ivan McClellan attended the Roy LeBlanc Invitational in Oklahoma, the country's longest-running Black rodeo, in 2015. McClellan was enchanted by the vibrant colors and lively energy, describing the atmosphere as a backyard barbecue. His love for the sport led him on a decade-long journey across America, capturing the current state of Black rodeo culture in a visually captivating way. From the skilled teen cowgirl Kortnee Solomon at her family's stables in Texas, to the fearless bull riding champion Ouncie Mitchell, and even the Compton Cowboys at their Los Angeles ranch, McClellan's photographs beautifully document the extraordinary athletes who continue to keep the spirit of the "Old West" alive with their bravery, strength, and talent.

The title of this book alludes to the intense and thrilling sport of bull riding. Competitors must hold on for a full eight seconds as the bull bucks wildly, with the most chaotic rides scoring the most points. This serves as a fitting comparison to McClellan's dedication to this in-depth documentary project, which demanded sharp reflexes, endurance, and stamina in order to capture the perfect image. In Eight Seconds, McClellan upholds the utmost principles of independence, honesty, and resilience through his intimate photographs that capture the profound bond between individuals and their environment.
