Mickalene Thomas used a 35mm disposable camera to capture a compelling series of photographs that inspired Maya No. 10. These images portray Maya, her muse and former partner, within the intimate setting of their Brooklyn residence and basement studio on Lexington Avenue. Portrait of Maya #10 embodies Thomas’s refined interpretation of feminine beauty and empowerment, radiating sensuality, grace, and sophistication. This artwork thoughtfully interrogates and redefines traditional notions of gender, race, sexuality, and femininity, presenting a layered and insightful exploration of these complex themes.
