An all-encompassing study of Yayoi Kusama, Japan's renowned contemporary artist.

Yayoi Kusama has been driven by her originality, innovation, and strong desire to convey her message throughout her six-decade long career. She has explored various forms of art, including painting, printmaking, photography, collage, and product design, along with performance and installation.

Kusama was a pioneering figure in the art scene of New York City during the late 1950s to early 1970s, and later rebuilt her career in Japan. Despite facing a long wait for international recognition, she continues to push the boundaries of her creative imagination in her ninth decade.

This beautifully illustrated book accompanies the first major retrospective exhibition of Kusama's work in the UK and includes an introductory essay by Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern, along with four other substantial essays by prominent critics. Topics covered include Kusama's New York years, her career in Japan, her installations, and a psychoanalytical perspective on her art.

Frances Morris is director of Tate Modern.

Jo Applin is head of the History of Art Department at The Courtauld Institute of Art.

Juliet Mitchell is professor emerita of psychoanalysis and gender studies at the University of Cambridge.

Mignon Nixon is professor of modern and contemporary art at University College London.
