KAWS: Art and Comics

A wide-ranging exploration of comics, characters, and the visual language of KAWS and his contemporaries.

KAWS: Art & Comics examines the dynamic interplay between comics, cartoons, and fine art, positioning the American artist KAWS alongside contemporary practitioners who blur the boundaries between high and low art. The book traces how artists from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Keith Haring challenged traditional divisions, establishing comics as a universal visual language that transcends cultural and generational barriers.

KAWS emerged from 1990s graffiti culture, evolving into a major contemporary voice through monumental sculptures and distinctive character work. His COMPANION and ACCOMPLICE figures—rendered in bronze, wood, and inflatables—convey emotional depth and isolation, reflecting the artist's mastery of form and narrative.

This volume positions KAWS within a lineage of artists who harness the expressive power of simplified, iconic imagery to create work of profound cultural resonance. Essential for collectors, art enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the intersection of street art, pop culture, and fine art practice.
